Water recycling in WA

Increasing the amount of water we recycle is vital to help WA become more climate resilient.

Finding new water sources that allow us to be less dependent on rain is essential to Perth's water future. By working with businesses and industries on developing efficient water recycling practices in WA, we can continue to secure a robust and sustainable water future.

What is recycled water?

Water recycling is a process where treated wastewater is further treated so it is 'fit for purpose'. It can then be used for a range of purposes like:

• Irrigation of sports grounds, golf courses and public open spaces
• Industrial processing
• Replenishing our groundwater after further treatment
• Toilet flushing/clothes washing/garden watering
• Maintaining wetlands or other environmental purposes
• Irrigation of non-food crops (e.g: trees, woodlots, turf, flowers)
• Construction/dust suppression

Our water recycling targets for WA

We are committed to recycling 30% of wastewater by 2030. Over the last 10 years we have increased the total volume of recycled water by almost 70% across WA.
