There are plenty of great places to fish in Kununurra, but the restricted area at the Kununurra Diversion Dam bridge is not one of them.

Water Corporation North West Regional Manager, Rino Trolio, said people had put themselves at risk by ignoring warning signs and entering restricted areas.

“If you choose to jump the fence and fish on the banks of the Ord River you can easily be swept into the turbulent water, causing serious injury or even death,” Mr Trolio said.

“Signs and marker buoys clearly mark the restricted areas, which include the entire Kununurra Diversion Dam wall, as well as sections of river extending 100 metres upstream and 200 metres downstream of the dam.

“You are not permitted in the restricted areas, even in boats, because of the risk posed by water discharged from the open dam gates.

“We do not want any member of the community to put themselves at risk.”

Signage and fencing is in place to advise people not to enter the restricted area; however some people continue to ignore the many warnings.

“I thank the many community members who do the right thing and keep clear of the restricted areas around the Kununurra Diversion Dam bridge,” Mr Trolio said.
