Water Corporation community grant supports Broome healing project

There is a saying that without knowledge of your past, history and culture, you are like a tree without roots.

This is one of the guiding principles of ‘Change ‘Em Ways’, a Broome-based program aimed at promoting healing and social connection for Aboriginal people from violent relationships.

Team Leader at Men’s Outreach Service, Caroline Vigar, said they were able to deliver ‘Change ‘Em Ways’ to women for the first time, thanks to a $9,000 Water Corporation Kimberley Community Grant. 

“A big focus of our program is creating a deeper understanding of the impact intergenerational trauma and colonisation has on people’s lives and behaviour, and the healing that must take place,” Ms Vigar said. 

“Thanks to Water Corporation, we have been able to successfully deliver support to a number of women and their families in the Broome community since last year.”

Water Corporation North West Regional Manager, Rino Trolio, said it was a privilege to help Men’s Outreach Service carry out their important work.

“One of the aims of the Kimberley Community Grants program is to alleviate disadvantage in the community,” Mr Trolio said.

“Change ‘Em Ways is a great fit because it is developed specifically to help Aboriginal people overcome barriers and support families.”

The next round of the Kimberley Community Grants program is now open, with grants of up to $10,000 available for not-for-profit organisations and schools across the Kimberley.
