More than 40 Walpole residents recently attended free 'hands on' waterwise garden workshops at the Community Resource Centre.

Water Corporation Great Southern Regional Manager Adrian Stewart said the free workshops helped to provide advice to residents to help save water in their gardens.

“A large amount of household water use occurs outside the home, so gardens are a great place to start when it comes to saving water,” Mr Stewart said.

Gardening experts John Colwill and Garry Heady, from the Beyond Gardens Team, hosted the two workshops on behalf of the Water Corporation.

The first workshop titled ‘Gardenwise Means Waterwise’ covered many concepts including attracting nature back into the garden, how to reduce water, and nutrient use while saving money with great results.

The second workshop ‘Home-grown Food’ covered secrets on how to increase the productivity of a food garden while still being waterwise.

Mr Stewart said the workshops at the Community Resource Centre were important to demonstrate the importance of having water efficient gardens that not only flourish, but can still provide great home-grown produce.

“It was encouraging to see so many local residents taking an interest in how to save water in the garden,” Mr Stewart said. 

Mr Stewart also reminded Walpole residents they can save more water by taking part in Water Corporation’s free shower head swap program.

“Walpole residents can take up to two old showerheads, along with a recent Water Corporation bill, to the Walpole Community Resource Centre and swap them for new water efficient shower heads for free,” Mr Stewart said.
