Voting open in Water Corporation's 2022 Community Choice Awards

Waterwise projects in the City of Mandurah, Town of Bassendean, Shire of Murray and City of Bayswater have been shortlisted for Water Corporation’s 2022 Community Choice Awards, with voting open until Friday, 22 April. 

The awards showcase projects or initiatives by Gold Waterwise Councils that demonstrate excellence in waterwise education or efficiency.

Each project is featured on Water Corporation’s website. To vote, head to Water Corporation’s Facebook page on or after April 11 and ‘react’ to the post featuring your favourite project.

Shortlisted projects include:

• Town of Bassendean – for transforming a stormwater basin within Mary Crescent Reserve, Eden Hill into a micro wetland. The community-led project now provides better amenity for residents, a habitat for local flora and fauna while in the long term, reducing water use and creating a cooler park environment.
• Shire of Murray – for designing a waterwise demonstration garden at the Murray Library. The project invited community members to help install waterwise vegetation while at the same time learning how to design, plant and maintain their own native waterwise garden.
• City of Mandurah – for recycling over 51,000 kilolitres of water from the Halls Heads Resource Recovery Plant in just one year. Through newly installed solar bores, the City is now able to store and reuse water to irrigate some of its public open spaces.
• City of Bayswater – for a waterwise transformation of Arbor Park in Morley which converted 5,000m2 of grass into eco-zoning with mulch and 10,000 waterwise plants. More than 550 community members were involved in the design and planting, gaining valuable waterwise skills to use in their home gardens.

Water Corporation General Manager Customer and Community Karen Willis said the awards were an opportunity to celebrate councils that showed leadership in sustainable water management.

“Local government is at the forefront of helping spread the waterwise message, which is why it’s so pleasing to see councils taking initiative and promoting water efficiency at a grassroots level,” Ms Willis said.  

“Those nominated are all participants in the Waterwise Council Program, which is run by Water Corporation and the Department of Water and Environmental regulation to help local governments adopt more water-efficient practices.

“As climate change continues to impact rainfall, it’s incredibly important we look to community projects which promote cooler, greener and more liveable suburbs.

“It’s fantastic to see such a diverse range of projects nominated, and equally pleasing to see the level of collaboration and engagement with the community.”

Voting closes 22 April with winners announced at Water Corporation’s annual Waterwise Recognition Event on 4 May.
