Turning blue for a cause

Have you spotted the recently painted blue tree along Busselton Bypass?  This hard to miss landmark near Strelly Street, standing almost 20 metres tall is one of a handful of blue trees that has appeared around the south west as part of the ‘Blue Tree Project’.

This National project aims to encourage people to start the difficult conversations and open up if they are suffering depression or anxiety.

The sudden change of colour of the tree is thanks to Alex Walker and family of Fairlawn Estate, Apex Busselton and Water Corporation who joined together to show support for mental health awareness coinciding with R U OK Day on Thursday 12 September.

It is hoped that through spreading blue paint, it helps spread the message that it is OK to not be OK.

Water Corporation South West Regional Manager John Janssen said Water Corporation was proud to support the program by giving trees a ‘blue’ lease on life.

“Mental wellbeing is such an important issue especially in regional communities. It is vital we do what we can to help break down stigmas  associated  with mental health, and let everyone know that it’s OK to not be OK,” Mr Janssen said.

“It is our hope these striking blue trees act as conversation starters and ultimately help save lives.”

Painting the tree using non- toxic paint  was achieved by six Water Corporation and Apex volunteers thanks to the use of a crane.
