A parcel of land previously used by Water Corporation as a temporary site compound in South Bunbury has been transformed into a beautified coastal space following a recent community planting day.

Water Corporation, the City of Bunbury and Leschenault Catchment Council partnered with the community for a day of planting and landscaping in an area near the beach dunes off Birch Street.

Water Corporation South West Regional Manager John Janssen, said it was fantastic to give back to the community through the restoration project.

“As we were able to use the site as a temporary compound for one of our essential projects in Bunbury, we wanted to see it grow into something the community can now enjoy.

“We were really excited to partner with the City of Bunbury and Leschenault Catchment Council to turn this site into a more liveable space, with native coastal plants, recycled materials and a new beach access track,” Mr Janssen said.

“Leschenault Catchment Council oversaw the transformation of the site, with seedlings planted sourced from the Leschenault Community Nursery.”

Bunbury Mayor Gary Brennan said the landscaping would help reduce sand drift and improve the diversity of coastal plants along the dune.

“It was great to see so many people take part on the day and this project will impact positively on our local coastal environment,” Mayor Brennan said.

Leschenault Catchment Council Chairman, Adrian Azzari-Colley said the community planting day was a great success, with over 35 enthusiastic residents attending.

“Thank you to everyone who joined us on the day to plant over 200 native seedlings which over time will provide habitat for local fauna and help prevent erosion,” Mr Azzari-Colley said.
