Saving water is all in a days work for business and industry

• Public Transport Authority recognised as Platinum Waterwise Business of the Year
• Water Corporation's non-residential water saving programs have saved 93 billion litres since 2007

Water Minister Dave Kelly recognised the top water savers in business and industry at the 2019 Water Corporation Waterwise Recognition event this morning.

The Waterwise Business Program supports non-residential customers using more than 20 million litres of scheme water each year, to improve water management and help save water.

A total of 10 businesses received Gold Waterwise Business status for achieving a significant improvement in water use, with the Public Transport Authority of Western Australia (PTA) taking out top honours as the Platinum Waterwise Business of the Year.

The PTA was awarded for its leak detection program, which uses data loggers to quickly identify and repair leaks at its sites. It was also praised for its work using rail formations to create terraces to collect water for waterwise gardens, as well as its ongoing work to review irrigation and bore use.

The Waterwise Office Program is a partnership between the Water Corporation, Property Council of Australia and City of Perth, and helps office building owners and managers to save water.

St Georges Terrace-based Brookfield Place and GDI Property Group also both achieved Platinum recognition.

Together, the 296 participants in the Waterwise Business and Waterwise Office programs helped to save more than 10 billion litres of water in 2017-18. This is the equivalent of about 4,500 Olympic swimming pools full of water.

"These programs have helped to save more than 93 billion litres of water since being introduced in 2007. To put this in perspective, this is more than double the amount of water produced each year by the Perth Seawater Desalination Plant.

"Business and industry are often challenged on their water use by the community, and it is encouraging to see such commitment and passion when it comes to using water sustainably.

"Aside from the environmental benefits, the sustainable use of water also makes good business sense.

"Climate change is real, and we see it every year in the decline in rainfall, so it is up to all of us to do our part to ensure we are using water as the precious resource it is."
