Metro standpipes
Standpipes are portable water services designed to be connected to a hydrant in a water main to access bulk water in the Perth metro area.
Standpipes are a last resort option when other possible alternative water sources are not available or do not meet the required water quality requirements.
When can a standpipe be used?
Hydrant standpipes can be used for the following purposes:
- short term pavement works (e.g. car park/footpath construction)
- landscaping and tree works
- high-pressure applications
- drain cleaning
- drilling
- dewatering
- chemical application
- water boring
- dust suppression
- filling a storage vessel (drinking or other).
It is not permitted to fill a swimming pool from a standpipe unless the water is carted to the property and there is no alternative water source at the property where the pool is located.
Please check that an alternative water source is not available within a 5 kilometre radius of the intended location of use. Alternative sources include water courses, shared bores or dams.
Applications for alternative sources such as surface water or groundwater can be made through the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER) at the Swan/Avon Regional office on (08) 6250 8000, the Kwinana/Peel Regional office on (08) 9550 4222 or your local DWER office.
Accessing standpipes
All standpipes accessing the Water Corporation water network must be hired from Water Corporation. The standpipe may only be used in the Perth metro region, bounded by the local government boundaries of Rockingham, Serpentine-Jarrahdale, Armadale, Mundaring, Swan, Kalamunda and Wanneroo.
To prevent the potential disruption to water pressure for surrounding customers, standpipes must only be used on mains of 100mm diameter and above.
In regional areas, including Mandurah, customers can access bulk water through fixed standpipe stations.
Hiring a standpipe
To hire a metered standpipe, please apply for a hydrant standpipe.
There are 2 sizes of metered standpipes available - 25mm (100 litres per minute) and 40mm (250 litres per minute). Only 1 standpipe may be requested per application. Please read through the terms and conditions carefully.
Please note: approval of a standpipe hire application may take up to 1 week.
Fees and charges
Refer to the Perth Region Standpipe Hire Fees for current fees and charges.
Upon application approval, Water Corporation will request the application fee payment, security bond and one month of hire fees.
We’ll issue a receipt document with details on standpipe collection. Standpipes can be collected from Water Corporation locations in Balcatta and Canning Vale. Please bring documentation when collecting the standpipe.
Licences
To apply for a change in water usage or a licence extension, please email Building.services@watercorporation.com.au
If a Licence Extension application is approved, a new Licence will be issued and must be retained with the standpipe. The old licence can then be disposed.
