Meet the local businesses boosting recycling awareness in Perth

It’s National Recycling Week (9 – 15 November), a time for Australian households and businesses to reflect on their recycling habits and minimise their waste. And that includes us!
This year’s theme ‘Recovery – A future beyond the bin’, urges all Aussies to value our resources and recycle wherever we can.
We recycle wastewater as part of our daily operations, using the treated water to irrigate ovals and parks as well as turning the leftover solids into fertilizer and soil improver for canola farms and woodlots. We also further treat some of the wastewater, returning it deep underground to top up our aquifers.
But there’s always more work to be done! To further support recycling in our community, we sponsor local businesses coming up with innovative new ways to reduce, re-use and recycle. Here are a few of our current partners and the amazing work they’re doing.
Greenbatch Foundation
By 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. It was this statistic that spurred Darren Lomman, founder of Greenbatch, into action.
What started as a simple collection point at the back corner of the University of WA’s grounds has now transformed into a sizeable volunteer organisation, dedicated to educating Perth about recycling and sustainable plastic use.
We are proud to support Greenbatch’s initiatives, which include a recycling education centre, and a mobile education and recycling service. The foundation also has a school program, providing plastic recycling bins so kids and teachers can responsibly dispose of their waste, which is then collected and diverted from landfill or export.
Plastic waste collected by Greenbatch is reprocessed at their facility in Mt Claremont. This plastic is transformed into items such as 3D filament (3D printer ink) for schools.
Loop Upcycling
We recently partnered with LOOP Upcycling and commenced a pilot utilising redundant Water Corporation workwear, which will be used to create useful workplace items such as carry bags for our PPE (personal protective equipment).
