Households in select Great Southern regional towns are being encouraged to help save water in the home by taking advantage of Water Corporation’s waterwise offers before the end of May.

Showerhead Swap program

Water Corporation’s Showerhead Swap program offers residents in Cranbrook, Hopetoun, Lake Grace, Newdegate, Kulin, Nyabing, Pingrup, Gnowangerup and Kondinin the opportunity to exchange up to two old showerheads for new, water-efficient models.

Water Corporation Great Southern Regional Manager Adrian Stewart said swapping old showerheads was simple and easy to do, and encouraged households to take advantage of the free program.

“Since last October, 86 households across the Great Southern have swapped 106 inefficient showerheads for water-efficient ones, saving approximately 1.72 million litres of water per year – equivalent to 40 backyard swimming pools,” Mr Stewart said.

“Showers make up more than a fifth of total household water use. By simply switching to water-efficient showerheads, households can save up to 20,000 litres of water each year.

“Saving water doesn’t stop once you have made the swap to a waterwise showerhead. We encourage everyone to keep up their great water-saving habits by also limiting showers to four minutes or less.”

To take advantage of the free program, customers will need to visit their closest showerhead swap location with the Water Corporation waterwise letter or recent bill, along with their old showerheads.

Rainwater tank offer

As part of the waterwise program, Water Corporation is also offering a rebate on the cost of purchasing a new rainwater tank or plumbing in an existing tank into the toilet or washing machine.

This offer applies to customers in Cranbrook, Gnowangerup, Hopetoun, Jerramungup, Kondinin, Kulin, Lake Grace, Newdegate, Nyabing, Pingrup and Ravensthorpe.

Mr Stewart said the lead-up to winter was a good time to make the switch to using rainwater in the home.

“Despite a wet winter last year, the Great Southern is still one of the most climate-impacted parts of the world,” Mr Stewart said.

“Rainwater tanks help reduce dependency on scheme water, and when plumbed into toilets or washing machines they can save up to a fifth on the average household water use.

“It’s important we do what we can to save our most precious resource.”

Offers are available until 31 May 2022, or until stocks last. For more information, including showerhead swap locations, visit: watercorporation.com.au/waterwise
