Kununurra Community Garden converts fridges into raised garden beds
Families in Kununurra are saving fridges from landfill by converting them into raised garden beds, thanks to funding from the Kimberley Community Grants Scheme.
The Upcycled Fridge Grow Beds Project is the brainchild of Mandy Milburn at Kununurra Community Garden. With the help of Revive and East Kimberley Job Pathway, 20 fridges have been upcycled into grow beds, complete with drip-system watering.
The project provides the necessary components to create and maintain a raised garden bed including a hose, hose fittings, tap timers, hand trowel, soil and seeds. Participants of the project are also taught the basics of growing herbs and other small, leafy greens at home.
At Kununurra Community Garden, families learn about regenerative gardening practices that improve the soil and are better for the environment. Raised garden beds help to conserve water as they can provide better water retention and drainage.
Each bed in the project has also been hand painted with a vibrant, colourful design so they’re both a functional and beautiful addition to the garden.

Round 7 of Kimberley Community Grants has now closed. We will be announcing the recipients for 2021 by early July.
