Karratha top of the swaps for WA

Karratha is leading the state with local residents swapping their old showerheads for new water efficient showerheads as part of Water Corporation’s 2019 Waterwise Towns Program. Karratha has swapped an impressive 168 showerheads since the inception of the program.

Kalgoorlie is following closely behind with 133 showerheads swapped through the program, and 56 showerhead swaps in Port Hedland.

Each year, Water Corporation selects regional communities around Western Australia to take part in the Waterwise Towns Program. Last year, Onslow, Nullagine and Halls Creek took part in the program and households helped to save two million litres of water, which is equivalent to almost 48 backyard swimming pools.

This year, the Pilbara has experienced its second consecutive dry wet season. Even though March saw Cyclone Veronica bring significant rainfall to the area, only about four billion litres of streamflow made its way into the Harding Dam catchment.

Water Corporation North West Regional Manager Rino Trolio said the consecutive dry wet seasons, and Bureau of Meteorology’s forecast of a less than average number of cyclones, means there is no better time for community members to increase water saving initiatives in the home.

“It is fantastic to see Karratha and Port Hedland leading the state in an effort to help value, protect and conserve water to make a positive difference for generations to come.” Mr Trolio said.

“Around 22 per cent of household water use is in the bathroom, and with one water efficient showerhead saving up to 20,000 litres of water a year, every swap can really make a difference.”

“With the levels of Harding Dam sitting low, we are fortunate to be able to continue to supply the West Pilbara area with water from the Millstream and Bungaroo ground water sources until Harding Dam receives a recharge.” Mr Trolio said.

“I encourage residents to visit the Water Corporation website to find out simple ways to be waterwise both at home and at work and help to ensure a sustainable future.”

Port Hedland customers can make their swap at the Civic Centre (08) 9158 9300 and City of Karratha residents can make their swap at Karratha Library (08) 9186 8660, inside the Red Earth Arts Precinct.  Due to popular demand, we encourage residents to call ahead to ensure stock is available that day.

The program runs until 31 May 2020 or until stock lasts.
