Derby bird hut
Derby District High School students and professional artists have come together to create a stunning mural commissioned by Water Corporation to celebrate water and Derby’s unique natural environment.
Water Corporation North West Regional Manager Rino Trolio said the project gave students a unique opportunity to work alongside professional Aboriginal artists and learn about water management in Derby.
“Students learned how Water Corporation’s wastewater operations in Derby have created a constructed wetland that supports an incredibly diverse range of bird species,” Mr Trolio said.
“Experienced artists from Mowanjum worked with students to help them develop and inspire the artwork.
“The students and artists should be very proud of the vibrant mural they have created – we certainly are.”
More than 80 students participated in the mural project, under the guidance of Geraldton-based artist Helen Ansell.
The mural will feature prominently at the school with a digital version to be printed on signs at Water Corporation’s new Derby bird watching platform, near the artificial wetland off Conway Street.
Water Corporation built the Derby bird watching platform in partnership with the Derby LandCare group and members of the Derby and Broome bird watching community, as it is a magnet for local birds.
