Create a waterwise verge and help save water

Water Corporation is encouraging households in the South West to consider transforming their verge into a low-maintenance waterwise garden to save water.

Water Corporation South West Regional Manager John Jansen said waterwise verges were important green spaces that helped foster sustainability and liveability, increased urban cooling and promoted biodiversity.

He said a considerable amount of household water use occurred outside in the garden, and waterwise verges would not only save households time and money, but would also help save water.

“The impact of climate change is particularly evident in southwest Western Australia , with rainfall between May to July around 20 per cent less than the average.

“With this front of mind, we urge everyone to make a conscious effort every day to help save precious water – creating a waterwise verge is just one example of what households can do to make a difference.”

Mr Jansen said before creating a waterwise verge it was important to understand any council requirements and he recommended using Water Corporation’s online Waterwise Plant Directory to find out what waterwise plants would grow best in local soil.
