Broome WW overflow final update

Final Update: Thursday, 21 February 2018 – 9am

Broome South Wastewater Treatment Plant – Clemenston Street

The overflow via the spillway of the Broome South Wastewater Treatment Plant stopped in the early hours of Wednesday, 21 February 2018. Treated wastewater is no longer mixing with stormwater and entering Roebuck Bay. 

Overflow volumes from the treatment plant’s ponds to the spillway had reduced significantly by Monday, 19 February 2018 however strong winds continued to push minimal flows over the spillway.

Signage remains in place to advise people to keep away from the spillway area as a precaution.

It is important to note the wastewater that overflowed was not raw wastewater – it had gone through the treatment process onsite.

Treated wastewater stopped overflowing from the Broome North Wastewater Treatment Plant on Monday, 19 February 2018.

Water Corporation crews have significantly reduced overflow volumes at both facilities by operating the irrigation system at the Broome North Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Advice – Roebuck Bay

As a precautionary measure, people are advised not to swim, fish or recreate in Roebuck Bay or Dampier Creek.

The Shire of Broome is carrying out water sampling, which will inform the decision to remove its public warning signs at Roebuck Bay.
