Broome community mural

Broome North Primary School students and their families have created a stunning mural celebrating the local community’s unique birdlife and waterways.

The project was funded by Water Corporation’s Kimberley Community Grants Scheme, which saw an everyday water tank transformed into a vibrant addition to the Cable Beach esplanade.

The colourful artwork profiles seven different types of local birds, including the Black-tailed Godwit, White-bellied Sea-eagle and Black-necked Stork to name a few.

Water Corporation North West Regional Manager Rino Trolio said the project helped create greater community awareness about the importance of water to local wildlife.

“Students learned about how Water Corporation helps support Broome’s incredibly diverse wildlife by providing a bird-friendly water habitat at its two wastewater treatment facilities,” Mr Trolio said.

“Experienced Perth-based artist Mel Mcvee created the designs for the mural and worked with the students and their families to take it from concept to reality.

“Everyone involved in the project should be very proud of the vibrant mural they have created – we certainly are.”

Ms Mcvee said it was heart-warming to see around 80 students and their family members take so much pride in the artwork they created.

“Community art projects give young people an opportunity to make a positive and long-lasting contribution to their town, and the Cable Beach mural is a great example of art helping to bring people together,” Ms Mcvee said.
