A splash of colour for Water Corporation assets in Bernard Park

Northam locals will be stopped in their tracks walking through Bernard Park, with two wastewater access chambers receiving a makeover through Water Corporation’s community art program, Splash of Colour.

Water Corporation joined forces with the Shire of Northam, Wheatbelt Development Commission, Patricia Rose from Artists Revolution and local artists, Makayla Kickett and Tom de Munk Kerkmeer to turn the previously ordinary looking assets into vibrant pieces of public art.

Water Corporation Goldfields and Agricultural Regional Manager, Sharon Broad, said the Splash of Colour program aimed to create community identity and help brighten people’s day.

“We know some of our assets in highly visible areas look a bit ordinary, so we worked with the community to bring a little splash of colour to Bernard Park – and a smile to the faces of the many people who visit Northam,” Mrs Broad said.

“Splash of Colour is a program being rolled out across WA and we look forward to more community art brightening up our assets.”

Artists Revolution co-founder, Patricia Rose, congratulated artists Tom and Makayla on their great work in Bernard Park.

“The artwork represents the place where two cultures meet – there is the tendency of western society to divide the world into squares and rectangles and then an organic contrast of an elegantly curling rainbow serpent representing the river and its meeting places,” Ms Rose said.

This was a sentiment echoed by Local aboriginal elder, Thomas Garlett, who said he was pleased to see this artwork in Bernard Park, as it was traditionally a meeting place where many stories had been shared.
